The Safety and Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting and improving environmental, health, and safety (EHS) performance across the organization. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with applicable regulations, company policies, and industry standards while driving continuous improvement initiatives
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
3-5 years of relevant EHS experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or similar setting.
Certification(s) preferred: CSP, GSP, ASP, CHMM, or similar.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and relevant local/state environmental regulations.
Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and EHS management systems.
Experience with ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001 systems.
Demonstrated ability to lead safety initiatives and influence teams.
Practical experience in accident investigation and root cause analysis (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Frequent work in a hot and humid production environment.
• Occasional work required outside in various temperatures.
• This position may perform activities in an environment that contains hazardous elements and requires safety awareness and adherence to all safety policies and guidelines.
• Work must be performed in a safe manner for personal protection and for the protection of other team members.
• All safety procedures in all functional areas must be followed, enforced, and strictly complied with.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Sitting, standing, walking, repetitive use of hands/arms/legs, and eye/hand coordination for 6+ hours a day.
• Ability to occasionally lift or carry 50 pounds.
• Occasional bending, reaching overhead, crouching, balancing, pushing, or pulling.
• Able to access all areas of the plant including the roof and areas above equipment.
• Ability to operate cars, trucks, and other powered equipment and tools.
• Must be able to wear all PPE that is required.
• Monitor and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, local, and corporate EHS regulations and guidelines.
• Conduct routine safety and environmental inspections, risk assessments, and audits.
• Investigate incidents and near-misses, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
• Assist in the development and delivery of safety training programs for employees and contractors.
• Maintain required records and prepare reports for regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders.
• Coordinate hazardous waste management, air and water permits, and environmental monitoring programs.
• Support emergency response planning and conduct periodic drills.
• Analyze EHS data and trends to develop action plans and drive improvements.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams on safety initiatives and project reviews.
• Promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship throughout the organization.
• Follow all plant GMPs / Food Safety Requirements.
• Other relevant duties as assigned and properly trained to complete.
