The Product Development Team supports the medical nutrition business by developing new and revising existing functional food product formulations to meet and complement dietary needs of patients with specific medical conditions. The Product Development Specialist supports a wide range of activities including developing new and improving existing products, providing detailed product information management, nutritional labeling, and food safety compliance, catering primarily to registered dietitians (RDs), regulatory agencies, and internal teams such as food production and marketing. This position is located in our functional food facility in Brockton, MA.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor's food science, nutrition, culinary science, dietetics or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in food product development or nutritional science.
• Proven ability to assess and interpret macro and micronutrient profiles relevant to clinical nutrition.
• Proficiency in labeling software with the ability to learn Genesis.
• Experience working with suppliers and vendors to identify and source alternative ingredients that meet quality and regulatory standards.
• Experience in recipe development and new food product formulation aligned with clinical nutrition principles and market needs.
• Demonstrated ability to assist with food formulations from bench top to commercialization in bakery products, frozen entrees and / or dry blends for such applications.
• Experience working in a small/mid-sized industrial baking facility preferred or food and /or nutrition company.
• Experience with food formulation & manufacturing; baking and frozen food experience desired.
• Experience tailoring food formulations to meet the defined nutritional requirements, functionality of ingredients as well as regulatory guidelines.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Able to review, understand and use FDA and EU regulations for food.
• Strong knowledge of food safety standards and nutrition regulations.
• Familiarity with impact of various processes on nutrient stability and interactions in food products.
• Proven ability to assess and interpret macro and micronutrient profiles relevant to clinical nutrition.
• Excellent communication skills for vendor liaison and cross-department collaborations.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management abilities
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position will work primarily in an office environment and within an industrial bakery as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to use a computer, keyboard, telephone, and other office equipment required for the role.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment when in the production environment.
• Ability to sit up to 4 hours a day per scheduled workday.
• Ability to stand/walk on concrete floors as required.
• Ability to work in a high temperature bakery environment when required.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to maintain existing products and recipes based on nutritional guidelines, consumer needs and production capabilities.
• Provide accurate and detailed product information to internal stakeholders.
• Manage and update nutritional labeling using Genesis product labeling software and nutrition analysis tools.
• Work with the food production team to keep formulation and kitting sheets current, maintaining product quality while striving to reduce manufacturing costs.
• Analyze and verify the nutritional content of products, emphasizing macro and micronutrients and amino acids, critical to the target market.
• Identify and qualify alternative ingredients as needed and work with ingredient suppliers and vendors to identify alternates.
• Support marketing team and medical affairs by providing nutrition information for special projects.
